Cas and Jonesy update...Mission accomplished!!

Updated 27th January 2012

Cas and Jonesy have become the first people to ski unsupported from the edge of the Antarctic to the South Pole and back!

They are currently waiting at the runway for their flight back to Union Glacier. A plane tried to land there earlier on but due to low contrast, the pilot decided not to land. They've pitched their tent and are just enjoying the last of their rations, while waiting for ALE to confirm when the plane will be coming.

Cas and Jonesy update..only 400km to go!

Updated 19th January 2012

The boys are on the home stretch now as they make their journey back from the South Pole. Averaging at around 40km per day and setting a new personal record a huge 45km!

The weather is increasingly getting warmer with temperatures around the minus 10 degree mark- which is a big change from the minus 25 degrees they were experiencing at the pole. Generally the weather conditions have been good with little snowfall.

In relation to their skiing per day, Cas and Jonesy have taken it up another notch- they are now on the trail for over 12hours a day. The time pressure on them to get back to Hercules Inlet is ever present in their minds. With over 400km still left to go, the boys are taking it day by day.

Both guys are in good spirits and managing their blisters and other minor injuries, such as Jonesy’s toes which have been giving him grief for some time now.

The boys only have another 1.5 weeks before they can come back to civilisation it’s hard to believe they’ve been out there for 80days! We are sure they are looking forward to their well deserved welcome home party!

                   They made it!
Cas and Jonesy reach the South Pole!

Updated:  3rd January 2012

There couldn't have been a better way for the boys to say goodbye to 2011.  While we were watching fireworks, they began 2012 by reaching the South Pole!

On the 31st of December 2011, they left their tent at their previous night's campsite and with one sled, pressed on to the pole.
Cas and Jonesy didn't spend too long at the pole, just enough time to take some photos and video footage of their fantastic achievement.

The boys had been skiing over 30kms a day in the past week, and say they are looking forward to the journey back with much warmer tempratures (warmer meaning minus 15 degrees celsius)!

They have lost around 15-20kgs each in weight, but are feeling great with no new injuries to report.

With a 1150km trek and 28 days to get back to Hercules Inlet, help bring the boys home with your much appreciated support!

An update on Cas and Jonesy's progress as they continue their Antarctica adventure to the South Pole:

Updated: 20th December 2011

We have received great news that Cas and Jonesy are now at day 50 of their adventure! The boys are currently traveling at around 30 kilometres on the trail in 9 hours of skiing a day (not including breaks).

WEATHER:
The weather has improved with low winds, clear visability and firm underfoot conditions. Light snow is still falling and the temperature has been around minus 15 degrees celsius! And if that wasn't cold enough, it is only going to get colder as the boys reach higher elevation.

FOOD:
They have started food rationing and are consuming approximately 2/3 of their daily rations. The boys still have some fat on their bodies but are expected to lose weight, around 20-30kg each

HEALTH:
Fortunately both guys are not suffering from any serious injuries, with Cas recovering from an earlier infection, whilst Jonesy is battling with continual issues with his toes. Morale has been very high over the past week with the boys managing to ski longer days and covering good kilometres!

WHAT'S AHEAD:
Cas and Jonesy's biggest focus over the holidays and coming weeks is to reach the South Pole - only 320 kiilometres away from their current position. If they maintain their current pace they will arrive in less than two weeks!

Facts about Crossing the Ice:

  • This will be the first EVER unsupported return journey to the South Pole.
  • The summer of 2011/12 will mark the 100 year anniversary of Scott and Amundsen - the first explorers to reach the South Pole.
  • Cas and Jonesy will be the youngest team to ever reach the South Pole.
  • Previous attempts: Jon Muir, Peter Hillary and Eric Phillips attempted the return journey in 1998. They reached the South Pole after 84 days on the ice and didn’t complete the return. Kiwi adventurers: Kevin Biggar and Jamie Fitzgerald also attempted the return journey in 2007, their attempt was also unsuccessful.
  • Distance: 2200km return (1100km from Hercules Inlet to the South Pole)
  • Less people have man hauled to the South Pole (58 people) than have stood on the summit of Mt Everest (4600).
