Home renovations blog: Creating the perfect laundry

Laundry rooms can often be a more neglected area of your home. Tucked away somewhere in the back, most people think that if the laundry is doing its job - and a typically uninteresting one at that - there's not much reason to switch things up. However, a beautifully organised and laid out laundry can often be a big selling point, particularly for families. It can even make doing the washing that bit more enjoyable on a regular basis.

Keep these tips in mind if you've decided to bring inspiration to the laundry room.

One job, two jobs, three jobs

Rather than thinking of the room as just somewhere to throw dirty clothes, broaden your horizons and consider all the things you can use the space for. Depending on the size of room, you can create a set up that lends itself to ironing and folding, storage - even sewing. Many homes lack the space to do these activities in other rooms, so a distinct space can be a real advantage.

A lot of this comes down to forward planning. If you don't have the luxury of starting the room from scratch, think about how you can adapt the current space to something more usable. Consider installing a cabinet system and bench top for folding and storing household items. This is particularly useful if your appliances are front-loading, as they can be tidily tucked underneath a bench and cupboards.

Have fun with your laundry

While you won't be spending too much time in the room, there's no reason why you shouldn't enjoy it. Colourful accents can brighten up the space. A brightly tiled backsplash can add a hint of interest, while a cheery-hued accent wall will liven up a mostly neutral space.

Think durability for this part of the house. You can still have attractive flooring, but materials like vinyl might be more appropriate as it is easy to clean and comes in a wide range of finishes.

Planning the laundry can be an enjoyable experience, so make sure you have the right finance to back up your project. Get in touch with a resi loan specialist for a selection of home renovation loans to suit your project.
