Home renovations blog: Decorating your first home on a budget

If you've managed to put away enough cash for a deposit, stamp duty, moving costs and every other thing you can think of to move into your first home, you are probably very aware of the balance of your bank account.

Moving into your first apartment or house can be a very exciting time, but it can be a bit disappointing if you are unable to truly make it your own with some unique decorating. You don't need to hire an interior designer or splurge on custom furniture to achieve a home that has personality and charm.

Minimise flat-pack furniture

While you can find cheap assemble-yourself furniture online or at many big stores, these items can make a home look more depressing than cheery. No one wants to live in a perfectly geometrical and cheap-looking home. Make use of these inexpensive options for functional and unobtrusive pieces of furniture, like an office desk, bedside tables or laundry storage.

When it comes to the big-ticket items like a dining table or bookshelf, look at second-hand furniture or hand-me-downs to maximise your dollar spend. If you look online or at garage sales, you can pick up unique pieces of furniture that only require a lick of paint or varnish to make them chic and stylish again.

Splashes of colour

A bright accent colour will usually make a room feel more complete, even if you can't afford to fully kit it out just yet. The easiest (and cheapest) way to achieve this is to either paint a feature wall or add some small accents like cushions or throws.

One feature wall can usually be painted with a sample size paint pot, which won't cost much. If you're really creative you could get multiple free samples and try pull off your own multi-coloured wall design - only for the brave!
