Renovating your bedroom

There's nothing more satisfying than sinking into a comfortable bed at the end of a tiresome day and nestling under the sheets. Unless, of course, your bedroom is lacking in personality and warmth.

Whether you've taken out your first home loan or are living in your second or third property, there's always potential for a bedroom makeover.

Here's the lowdown on turning a blase bedroom in a total haven.

Embrace crisp sheets

Are you sleeping on sheets bought ten years ago? If your bed linen is worn thin or just plain ugly, it might be time for an update.

Interior Stylist Jason Grant told Home Life that cotton or linen sheets are a must for a luxurious bedroom. While cotton can take longer to dry than synthetic fabrics, it certainly feels much nicer against the skin.

"There are certain items we should spend more on, and quality bed linen is definitely one of those items," Mr Grant said.

Pick a block colour for the sheets, such as white or cream. Then select a duvet cover either in a similar hue or with a pattern that plays up complementary tones.

Pillow play

You can't go past luxurious pillows for a totally dreamy bedroom. Thick, oversized European pillows are a must-have for the bed, particularly if you're a keen reader, as they will help prop you up.

Consider piling up a love seat or window seat with silk or linen pillow. From decorative trims to intricate embroidery, you're sure to find a set of pillows that reflect your personality.

New walls

Once you've updated your bed linen, pillows and other decorative features, such as rugs, consider the walls.

Many property owners will undergo a home mortgage refinance in order to access a line of credit and complete home renovations. However, sometimes the fix is as simple as a fresh coat of paint on the walls.

Buttery cream or warm white are popular choices, particularly in smaller bedrooms. Alternatively, moss green, aubergine or ochre create a sense of intimacy and sophistication.
